The experience
The experience opens at your host's home with a South Indian coffee before heading to the local market together. You'll walk through vegetable and flower vendor stalls to see the regional produce that locals shop from daily. The ingredients you'll use in the kitchen later. This isn't a tourist market. It's where neighborhood cooks actually buy.
Back in Jyashree's kitchen, you'll spend roughly 1 to 2 hours learning to prepare the essentials of a South Indian Iyer meal: vegetable poriyal (sautéed vegetables with regional spices and fresh coconut), flavored rice, and rasam (a peppery tomato broth). The cooking happens hands-on, with Jyashree guiding you through technique and explaining how each dish fits into the meal. You'll work with fresh, seasonal ingredients and learn the balance of spices that defines this cuisine.
The meal arrives on a banana leaf, the traditional way, and includes everything you cooked plus dishes Jyashree prepared in advance: sambar, morkuzhmbu, vegetable fry, crisp dosas, homemade pickles and chutneys that change with the season, rice, and a sweet dessert to finish. You can request dietary accommodations at booking, and Jyashree adjusts for allergies and restrictions. The whole experience runs 5 hours and ends with recipes to take home and a connection to someone who cooks this food every day.

Is this one for you?Choose the morning market tour if you want to shop when vendors are freshest and have the afternoon free. Pick the evening option if you prefer to cook and eat later in the day. Either way, the 5-hour block keeps the market visit, cooking lesson and meal together in one sitting, so you're not splitting the experience across multiple bookings.

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years); Infant (under 5): free.
What time does the market tour start, and can I choose morning or evening?
You choose between a morning market tour or an evening one at checkout. Both include the cooking class and meal afterward. The full experience lasts 5 hours from start to finish.
Do I need cooking experience to join this class?
No. Jyashree teaches hands-on in her kitchen and guides you through each step, so beginners learn alongside the techniques. She explains the reasoning behind each ingredient and spice.
What exactly is a South Indian Iyer sapaad?
An Iyer sapaad is a vegetarian Tamil Brahmin meal: a specific regional spread that centers on rice, lentil dishes like sambar and rasam, vegetable curries, and dosas. It's the traditional home cuisine Jyashree cooks daily.
Are there vegetarian options, or is the whole meal vegetarian?
The entire meal is vegetarian. All dishes (from the vegetables and lentils to the dosas and chutneys) follow South Indian vegetarian cooking traditions. Jyashree can adjust for allergies and dietary restrictions if you note them when booking.
Will I learn recipes I can make at home?
Yes. You'll cook three core dishes (vegetable poriyal, rasam, and flavored rice), and leave with the recipes and the techniques Jyashree teaches you. She also explains the regional produce and spice combinations so you can source ingredients where you live.
