The Experience

We squeezed into the bright green tuk tuk just outside our hotel in Jodhpur—honestly, I was a bit nervous about dodging cows and bikes, but our driver, Arjun, just grinned and said “Don’t worry, madam!” The city’s blue houses blurred past as we rattled uphill to Mehrangarh Fort. The air smelled faintly of fried snacks from street stalls and something sweet—jasmine maybe? Climbing up to the fort walls, I caught my breath (not just from the stairs). The view over Jodhpur’s rooftops is wild, like someone spilled a bucket of blue paint. Arjun pointed out where his family lives down below. I still think about that view.

Inside Mehrangarh Fort’s museum, there were these old swords and palanquins—somehow heavier than they looked—and rooms echoing with distant voices. Our guide told us stories about the Maharajas; I probably forgot half of them but remembered his laugh when he tried to teach me how to say “Jaswant Thada” right (I definitely didn’t). We wandered through Jaswant Thada next—a marble cenotaph with lattice screens so thin you could see sunlight shimmer through them. It was quieter here. Even the birds sounded softer.

After weaving back through traffic (and nearly getting sideswiped by a goat), we landed at Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum. Part hotel, part museum—there’s this weird mix of old grandeur and modern life. I touched one of the cool stone railings and wondered who else had stood there before me. Lunch break happened at Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell cafe—spicy samosas and cold chai while watching kids jump into the water below. Someone played an old Bollywood song on their phone nearby; it sort of fit.

The last stop was Sardar Market by the Clock Tower—so much noise and color it almost made my head spin. We haggled for bangles (badly), tasted something called mirchi vada that nearly blew my mouth off, then watched sunset light hit the market stalls. By drop-off, I felt both tired and oddly at home in this chaos. Not everything went smoothly—my shoes got soaked at Mandore Garden—but that’s kind of what makes it stick with you.
