The Experience

I’ll admit, I’d only seen Jodhpur in photos before—those endless blue houses stacked up like painted toy blocks. But walking those tangled lanes myself, with our guide Rajesh pointing out tiny shrines and laughing at my attempts to say “namaste” right, it felt way more alive (and honestly, a bit chaotic in the best way). The air smelled like frying onions and something sweet—maybe that was the lassi shop? It’s strange how quickly you get swept up in the noise and color here.

We started at Mehrangarh Fort, which looks even bigger when you’re actually standing under its walls. Inside, Rajesh led us through rooms with mirrored ceilings and gold trim—Sheesh Mahal and Phool Mahal. He told stories about old Marwar kings that made me imagine what this place sounded like centuries ago (probably less selfie sticks). The view over the city is wild—so much blue it almost hurts your eyes if the sun’s out. I still think about that view sometimes when I see my photos.

Afterwards we wandered down toward the Clock Tower market. There were women selling piles of red chilies and men arguing over tea prices—everyone seemed to know each other. At one point Rajesh handed me a samosa from a street stall (“best in Jodhpur,” he promised), and he was probably right. Flaky pastry, spicy filling—I burned my tongue but didn’t care. Umaid Bhawan Palace was next; it’s huge and golden, but honestly I liked the old city best. Maybe because it felt less polished? We ended in Mandore Garden where kids were playing cricket between ancient statues. I could’ve stayed there longer just listening to them shout and watching the light change on all those old stones.
