The Experience

Rishi was already grinning when we met him outside our hotel—he waved us over to his tuk tuk like we were old friends. The engine coughed to life and off we went, weaving through Jodhpur’s morning traffic. I tried to count the shades of blue on the houses as we zipped past (gave up after ten). At one point, Rishi slowed down just so I could smell the cardamom from a chai stall—he said it’s the best in the city. He was probably right.

The first stop was Mehrangarh Fort. I’d seen pictures but nothing really prepares you for how it towers over everything. Inside, Rishi knew every shortcut and every guard by name—he even pointed out a spot where his uncle once worked as a guide. The stone under my hand felt cool and rough; there was this faint echo of temple bells somewhere below. From the ramparts, you get that famous view of the Blue City—it’s almost too much to take in at once. Honestly, I just stood there for a while, not saying anything.

Afterwards we visited Jaswant Thada—a marble memorial that somehow manages to be both grand and quiet at the same time. Rishi told us about Maharaja Jaswant Singh II (I forgot half of it but remember he sounded important). We wandered around the gardens and watched some kids feeding fish in the pond. Then came Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum—part palace, part museum, part luxury hotel. There were vintage cars lined up outside; I joked about trading our tuk tuk for one and Rishi just laughed.

The last bit was Sardar Market by the Clock Tower. It’s loud and packed and smells like cumin and fried snacks—someone tried to sell me bangles in five different languages. We finished with a slow ride back through those narrow blue lanes again. I still think about that view from Mehrangarh Fort sometimes—you know when something just sticks with you?
