The Experience

“You see this wall? It’s older than my grandfather,” our guide Vikram grinned as we squeezed into the first narrow lane off Sardar Market. I could smell cardamom and frying batter before I even saw the samosa stand. The morning was already warm, but inside the market it felt busier—women in bright saris bargaining over piles of green chilies, a kid darting past with a stack of silver bangles. Vikram waved to a vendor who handed us lassi in metal cups; it was sweet, cold, almost too thick to drink fast. I tried not to spill any on my shirt but failed. He just laughed.

Mehrangarh Fort rises up so suddenly you almost have to squint—the blue houses below make it look even higher. Inside, the cool stone corridors echoed with our footsteps and a few distant voices. We stopped at Sheesh Mahal, where sunlight bounced off thousands of tiny mirrors. I didn’t expect to feel so small in there. Vikram told us about old Marwar kings, pointing out sword marks on a door (“from when they really meant business,” he joked). There was this faint scent of incense somewhere—maybe from one of the shrines tucked away behind carved doors.

The walk through Navchowkiya felt slower; maybe it was just the heat or all those shades of blue everywhere. Some doors were left open and you’d catch glimpses of courtyards or hear someone singing behind a curtain. We ended up back near the clock tower where Vikram insisted we try another snack—this time something spicy that made my nose run. I never did get the name right (Li laughed when I tried to say it), but honestly, that’s what sticks with me most: how everyone just seemed happy to talk for a minute or point out something I’d never notice alone.
