The experience

You start from your hotel and ride to Toorji's Step Well, built in the 1740s by a Maharaja's queen and buried under sand for nearly a century until its recent restoration uncovered over two hundred feet of hand-carved stone: dancing elephants, medieval lions and water-spouts carved into the rose-red sandstone. From there the tour moves to Mehrangarh Fort, where you walk through the Sheesh Mahal (crystal palace), Phool Mahal (flower palace), Sringar Chowk (coronation courtyard) and Moti Mahal (pearl palace), each room layered with the history of the Marwar kingdom.

The afternoon takes you down into the old city's narrow lanes to the Clock Tower and Sardar Market, where vendors sell spices, textiles, silver and handicrafts in a tangle of alleys that open onto the bazaar. You walk through Navchowkiya and the blue-painted neighborhoods where Brahmin families have painted their houses with limestone mixed with indigo. A practice that also keeps the heat and mosquitoes at bay. If the light is right, Pachetia Hill offers a 360-degree view of the blue city and the old fortified center spreading below it. The guide stops at Jaswant Thada, a white-marble cenotaph built by Maharaja Sardar Singh, which locals call the Taj Mahal of Marwar.
