The Experience

“Don’t worry, I’ll show you the real shortcut,” our guide Ajay grinned as he waved us away from the main road near Chandni Chowk. I’d barely caught my breath from the Qutub Minar climb — those ancient stones felt cool under my hand, like they remembered every monsoon. The city was already humming at 9am, chai sellers calling out over the traffic. We zipped across town in an air-conditioned car (thank goodness), Ajay pointing out where his grandmother used to buy sweets for Diwali. The rickshaw ride through Old Delhi was… chaos, but the good kind. There’s this moment when you’re squeezed between spice stalls and wedding saris fluttering overhead — it smells like cardamom and something smoky I still can’t name. Our driver shouted greetings to friends as we bounced along; I tried saying “namaste” back but probably mangled it. We stopped for lassi at a tiny shop — thick, cold, sweet enough to make me forget the heat for a minute. That taste is stuck in my memory now.

I didn’t expect to feel so quiet inside the Lotus Temple or at Raj Ghat. The city noise just faded out there; even Ajay spoke softer. By sunset at Lodhi Gardens, my feet were sore and my head full of colors and stories. I still think about that view of India Gate glowing in the evening haze — not sure a photo could ever get it right. The drive back was quiet; everyone just looking out the window, letting it all settle in.
