The experience
Lepakshi sits about 90 kilometers from Bangalore, and the day opens with pickup from your hotel and the drive south. Once there, you move through the temple complex with a guide who walks you through the Mukha Mandapa, the dance and performance hall, then into the Artha Mandapa where the king worshipped and where the inner sanctum houses the deity. The centerpiece is a wedding hall built from grey sandstone with 38 carved monolithic pillars: the legend says Lord Shiva and Parvati were married here in antiquity, and the carved detail on each pillar rewards close attention.
The other landmark is India's largest Nandi Bull, carved from a single granite block and standing 15 feet tall and 27 feet long. The statue wears jewelry (a kaasu malai bell chain, earrings and other ornaments) all carved into the stone. The guide explains the engineering of the hanging pillar in the temple hall, a structural feat that still puzzles modern architects. Local legends speak of giants who built the oldest sections, and the tour traces the evidence left behind in the stonework itself.
Lunch is vegetarian south Indian food, eaten during the day. The return journey to Bangalore takes the late afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel. Beverages and any food beyond the included lunch are at your own cost.
