Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Mysuru's palaces and market

  • Pick up from Bengaluru
  • Drive to Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace
  • Visit Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace
  • Travel to Mysore Palace
  • Tour Mysore Palace
  • Walk through Devaraja Market
  • Visit St. Philomena's Cathedral
  • Return to hotel in Bengaluru

Ever wondered what it feels like to walk through a palace where kings actually lived? We set off from Bengaluru just after sunrise—still yawning, honestly—and our guide Ravi kept us awake with stories about Tipu Sultan before we even reached Srirangapatna. The Summer Palace was quieter than I expected, wooden walls cool under my hand and faded paintings peeking out behind glass. Ravi pointed at some old script on a pillar—I pretended I could read it. You can almost smell the damp earth outside mixed with incense drifting in from somewhere nearby.

Mysore Palace was next and… well, I’d seen photos but standing there is different. There’s this echo when you step into the wedding hall (I whispered just to hear it bounce). The floors are so polished you see your own feet, which is awkward if you’re wearing socks with holes—don’t judge me. Ravi explained the Wadiyar dynasty stuff but I got distracted by sunlight hitting those stained-glass windows. It felt like being inside someone’s memory.

After that came Devaraja Market—louder than any place we’d been so far. Flower sellers shouting prices, turmeric dust in the air making me sneeze (which made one vendor laugh), and colors everywhere. I tried saying “mallige” for jasmine but probably butchered it; the lady selling them just grinned and handed me a garland anyway. Lunch was on a banana leaf—rice, sambar, something spicy I couldn’t name—and eating with my hands felt oddly freeing.

We ended at St. Philomena’s Cathedral, which looked almost out of place with its tall towers against all that South Indian bustle. The guide said the king built it for his European guests; I stood under those arches thinking about how many people must have passed through here feeling just as small as I did in that moment. The drive back to Bengaluru was quiet—everyone half asleep except Ravi humming along to old Kannada songs on the radio. Still thinking about those painted ceilings and the taste of cardamom in my mouth hours later…
