The Experience

Lalbagh opens the morning—a 240-acre botanical garden laid out in the 1760s by Hyder Ali, holding 2,100 plant species and nearly 8,500 trees. The walk passes a 3-billion-year-old rock, a Glass House modeled after the Crystal Palace in London, a mango tree planted by Hyder Ali himself, and a 300-foot Cook Pine named after Captain Cook. The garden also holds a tree branch that resembles the face of Ganesh and a 200-year-old White Silk Cotton tree, plus a British-era bandstand.

From there, the tour moves to the Bull Temple, where a monolithic Nandi (the bull, vehicle of Lord Shiva) has drawn visitors since 1537. Kempe Gowda, Bangalore's founder, discovered a huge rock that naturally resembled a bull and carved it into the form you see today—the fourth largest of seven monolithic bulls in South India. At the temple's base sits the Butter Ganesh, a smaller shrine, and the complex holds several other temples worth visiting. The site is famous for a Ground Nut Fair held each November.

Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace comes next—a 220-year-old teak structure built in Islamic architecture with a museum inside. The palace shows the diwan-e-am and diwan-e-khas (public and private audience halls) and tells the story of Tipu Sultan's wars with the British, his alliance with the French, and his role as the grandfather of rocket science. Vidhana Soudha, the state parliament built in 1956 in neo-Dravidian style, appears next; it can only be viewed from outside. The tour also includes the Krishna Rajendra Market (KR Market), where vendors, workers, cows, cycles and rickshaws jostle among heaps of vegetables, fruits, flowers and spices—a dense, working slice of Bangalore's everyday life.

Lunch is a vegetarian South Indian meal included with the transport option. A short tuk-tuk ride through city traffic is part of the experience. The tour operates with a licensed guide in English, and you choose at checkout whether you want guide service alone or guide service bundled with transport and lunch.
