The experience
Belur's Chennakesava temple took over a hundred years to build, and the detail is what makes the wait worthwhile. The walls are covered in carved animals and dancers, and episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata are cut directly into the stone. What stops most visitors is the precision: the bracelets on one dancer's arms actually move up and down, and another dancer's headdress has a moveable ring. The sculptures are signed (carved with the artisan's name or boastful epithet, like a painting), so you know who made each piece. Your guide walks you through the main hall and the temple complex over a couple of hours, pointing out the intricacy that made these carvings legendary.
After lunch, you head to Halebid, the other capital of the Hoysala empire, about 16 kilometers away. Two major temples sit inside the complex: the Hoysalesvara and Shantalesvara temples, both declared UNESCO world heritage sites. A third landmark is the giant statue of Nandi, the holy bull of Lord Shiva, which took 86 years to build. The veins on its face are carved with such grace that they look like they're about to move. You spend a couple of hours here, moving between the temples and the sculpture, before the drive back to your hotel.
The tour runs 12 hours door to door. Pickup happens from your city hotel, airport or Whitefield location depending on which option you choose at checkout. The vehicle is air-conditioned, the entrance fees are paid, and lunch, vegetarian south Indian food, is included. You can order other meals at your own cost. The guide speaks English throughout, and the pace suits all fitness levels.
