The experience
The Hooghly River north of Kolkata holds three European colonies within forty kilometres, each one a window into a different imperial story. Chandannagar was the French stronghold. You walk through Dupleix Palace, where French governors plotted against the British, and Patalbari, a mansion half-submerged in the river that once hosted Tagore and other Bengali luminaries. Bandel, the Portuguese settlement, centers on a 1660 church, Bengal's oldest European building, where violet blossoms grow among the graves of traders. Serampore, the Danish colony, is where William Carey founded Asia's first university in the 19th century and printed the first Bengali newspaper in 1818.
Your guide meets you at your hotel and drives you through all three in a single day, stopping at each site long enough to walk the grounds and hear the history. At Chandannagar, you see the Strand's colonial buildings, including the Durgacharan Rakshit Ghat, a pavilion built in the 1920s with carved columns and stucco work. At Bandel, the church itself is the anchor: the stained glass and the marble statue of the Mother of Sorrows inside are the emotional core of the visit. At Serampore, you walk past the Rajbari, the Goswami family mansion built in 1820, and stand where Serampore College and the Baptist Mission Press changed Indian education and print.
The day includes hotel pickup and drop-off, the car for all travel between sites, lunch at a traditional restaurant (vegetarian options available if you request at booking), and the guide's commentary throughout. You return to your hotel by evening. The pace is unhurried. This is not a rush through three towns, but a twelve-hour immersion in a corridor of history most visitors to Kolkata never see.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 12 years). Under 6: they can't be included in the booking.
What is Dupleix Palace and why does the tour start there?
Dupleix Palace in Chandannagar is a museum housed in the former residence of French governors and the natural entry point to the French colonial story. On display are cannons from the Carnatic wars, furniture and artifacts from the governor-generals, and relics of French rule. It sets the context for everything that follows along the river.
Can I visit the church at Bandel and walk around inside?
Yes. The church at Bandel was built in 1660 and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. You can enter and see the stained glass windows, the coloured reliefs of Jesus on the walls, and the marble statue of the Mother of Sorrows: the most striking sculpture in the complex.
What did William Carey do at Serampore that makes it historically important?
William Carey founded Serampore College in the 19th century, which was the first university in Bengal. He also ran the Baptist Mission Press, where the first Bengali newspaper, Samachar Darpan, was printed on May 23, 1818: a landmark moment in Indian publishing and education.
Is lunch included, and what kind of food will we eat?
Lunch is not included in the tour price, but your guide will take you to a traditional restaurant where you can order. Vegetarian options are available. Let the operator know at booking if you need this.
How long does the tour take and when do I get back to my hotel?
The full day trip runs twelve hours from pickup. You leave your hotel in the morning, visit all three settlements along the river, and return by evening: timing allows unhurried walking at each site without a rushed pace.
Do I need a car to do this, or can I use public transport?
The tour includes private transportation in an air-conditioned car, so you don't need your own vehicle. Public transportation options exist nearby if you prefer to arrange your own travel, but the private car is included in the booking.
