The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup at 8am and heads straight to the Mausoleum of Job Charnock, the man long credited with founding modern Kolkata in 1690 when he purchased the villages that would become the city. A recent High Court ruling has since challenged that claim, and your guide will walk you through the evidence and the history behind it. From there you move to St. John's Church, built in 1787 by architect James Agg: a stone and brick structure that became Calcutta's principal cathedral in 1815 and still holds a "Last Supper" painting on its walls.
The Writers Building comes next, a Greco-Roman structure that began as modest East India Company offices in 1777 but grew into the seat of West Bengal's state government. Your guide narrates the landmark events of India's freedom struggle that unfolded against this building's backdrop, though you view it from outside. The Governor's House, built in 1803 by English architect Charles Wyatt for the Governor General, follows a Neoclassical style with Baroque touches and now serves as the residence and office of West Bengal's Governor. The Shahid Minar, erected in 1848 with Egyptian, Syrian and Turkish design elements, originally honored a British general's military victory but today commemorates Indian freedom fighters instead.
After lunch, you reach the Victoria Memorial, the marble architectural centerpiece built by Viceroy George Curzon to honor Queen Victoria: a Victorian-era gem sitting in the middle of modern Kolkata's energy. Before returning to your hotel at 8pm, you take a 30-minute boat ride on the River Ganges, passing under the iconic Howrah Bridge and viewing the city from the water. The Indian Museum, India's oldest and largest, sits earlier in the day and holds relics, ornaments, fossils, antiques, armor and paintings spanning different eras, all collected since the Asiatic Society of Bengal founded it in 1814.
