The Experience

The Golden Temple is the spiritual center of Sikhism, and the tour starts there with a guide who walks you through the complex and into the community kitchen—the langar—where tens of thousands of people eat free meals every single day. You sit and eat with them. From there the guide takes you to Jallianwala Bagh, the walled garden where British General Dyer opened fire on unarmed protesters in 1919, killing over 400. The bullet holes still mark the walls.

In the late afternoon, the driver picks you up and heads to the Attari-Wagah Border, the only land crossing between India and Pakistan. The retreat ceremony happens once daily—timing shifts with the season, around 5 or 6 p.m. in summer, 4 or 5 p.m. in winter—and you watch soldiers from both sides perform a choreographed show of aggression and then shake hands at the gate. The driver stays with you; no guide is needed there. The whole day runs roughly eight hours with an air-conditioned vehicle and bottled water included.
