The experience
Five hours from Bangalore, Coorg sits in the Western Ghats and produces nearly 40 percent of India's coffee. The region earns its nickname "Scotland of India" for the terrain itself (rolling hills, thick vegetation, river valleys) rather than any single landmark. This tour strings together the places that define it: the falls tucked between private estates, the 19th-century fort in Madikeri, the two river confluences that hold religious significance, and the island formed by the Cauvery where bamboo and sandalwood grow thick.
Day one moves from pickup in Bangalore through the drive to Madikeri, with afternoon visits to Abbey Falls, Madikeri Fort (which houses a temple, chapel and small museum), and Omkareshwara Temple, built in 1820 with Kerala-style red-tile roofing and Islamic domes. The day ends at Raja Seat, a viewpoint with a musical fountain, before returning to the hotel. Day two stays in the Coorg area and focuses on water: Bhagamandala sits where the Cauvery and Kanika rivers meet, with a third river said to join underground, and Talacauvery marks the birthplace of the Cauvery at the foot of Brahmagiri Hills. Day three returns toward Bangalore, stopping at Cauvery Nisargadhama, an island accessible by hanging rope bridge, then Bylakuppe, where a monastery holds three large golden Buddha statues and a 62-foot seated Buddha covered in gold plate. Lunch happens at Kushalnagar before the final drive back to Bangalore airport or railway station.
The guide speaks English throughout. Hotel accommodation is in budget properties with basic Western amenities, and pickup is included from Bangalore Airport or centrally located hotels. The tour does not cover meals beyond what is arranged at lunch stops.
