Snorkeling in Roatan combines a guided kayak tour of French Cay harbor with a reef snorkel in the same outing. You paddle past hunting birds (king fishers, great blue herons, ospreys) around the mangroves and reef edge, then switch to snorkel gear and explore the underwater marine life. The activity runs about three hours and includes all equipment, bottled water and hotel pickup.

The experience

French Cay harbor is where this starts: you kayak through mangroves and around the reef shallows with a guide who points out the birds working the water. King fishers, great blue herons, ospreys and others hunting in the same zone where you're paddling. The kayak leg gives you a vantage on the island's wildlife before you ever get wet.

Once the kayak portion wraps, you pull on snorkel gear and enter the water to explore the reef and its marine life at your own pace. The guide is there, but the reef is yours to navigate. You've got bottled water throughout, and the whole outing (kayak and snorkel combined) takes about three hours. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and brings you back.
