The Experience

Oia was first — those blue domes really are as bright as everyone says, but what I didn’t expect was the quiet behind the main street. We ducked into an alley where a cat stretched out in a patch of sunlight, and for a second it felt like we were alone on the island. Nikos told us about his childhood here; apparently he used to sneak into the old castle ruins before they put up all the signs. Imerovigli came next — windier than I thought, hair everywhere — but the caldera view actually made me stop talking (rare for me). We took photos at Firostefani’s Three Bell Church too; there was this older couple arguing softly about camera angles in German, which made us laugh.

The highest point was Prophet Elias Monastery — honestly, I almost skipped it because “monastery” sounded stuffy, but standing up there at 565 meters with that salty air? Worth it. The bell towers echoed faintly even though no one was ringing them. Lunch happened down by the black sand beach (I still find grains of that sand in my bag), and we tried fried tomato balls that Nikos swore were “the only real ones.” Red Beach looked almost unreal — iron-red cliffs against turquoise water. I got sand in my shoes and didn’t even care.

By the time we wound through Megalohori’s alleys again, I realized how much of Santorini you miss if you only stick to postcards or big group tours.
