Red Beach colors, Akrotiri ruins, caldera views & Oia sunset on a private drive

You’ll ride in comfort across Santorini’s wild colors with a local guide who knows every shortcut and story. Walk Red Beach’s volcanic sand, explore ancient Akrotiri ruins, sip coffee above the caldera, then watch sunset from Oia’s castle walls. The island feels different when someone shows you their home.

You know that feeling when you wake up somewhere new and the air just smells different? That’s how it started for me in Santorini — salt and wild thyme drifting in through the van window as our guide, Giorgos, waved us inside. The Mercedes was spotless and cool (thank god), and right away he started chatting about growing up here, pointing out a bakery his aunt still runs. We headed straight to Red Beach first. I’d seen photos but standing there, red cliffs piled above black sand, it felt almost Martian. My shoes filled with warm grit and I kept thinking, how does this even exist?

We zigzagged past tiny white chapels perched on hillsides — Giorgos honked at someone every five minutes. He said everyone knows everyone here; I believed him after the third wave. At Akrotiri, he called it “the Greek Pompeii” and handed us bottled water before we wandered through those ancient streets half-buried in ash. It was quiet except for our footsteps echoing off old stone walls. I tried to imagine living here before the volcano — impossible really, but you get these flashes of it if you close your eyes.

The drive up to the Monastery of Profitis Ilias was twisty and steep. At the top, wind whipped my hair everywhere and Giorgos grinned like he’d seen this view a thousand times but still liked showing it off. You can see nearly all of Santorini from there — blue domes scattered like dice across white villages, dark lines where lava once ran. We stopped for coffee in Megalochori (I totally mispronounced it; Giorgos laughed but fixed me gently), then rolled down to Perissa Beach where the sand is black and hot underfoot. Kids splashed in water so clear you could see their toes.

Oia was last — crowded but somehow peaceful at sunset. We found a spot near the old Venetian castle with locals already waiting (one woman offered us olives from her paper bag). The light turned everything gold for about five minutes before slipping away behind rooftops. I didn’t want to leave that moment — honestly, I still think about that view sometimes when I need quiet.
