The Experience

“You want to see the real Santorini?” our driver Kostas grinned as he handed us cold water in the van. I nodded, still half-awake from the early pickup (they’ll pick you up wherever you’re staying—big plus). First stop was Oia, and honestly, I didn’t expect the quiet. The sun was barely up over those blue domes and white houses carved right into the rock. You could smell coffee drifting out of tiny doorways. Kostas pointed out where his grandmother used to live—just a blue door tucked into the hillside. I tried to snap a photo but mostly just stood there watching the light change.

We wound through Firostefani next—tiny streets, cats everywhere, and that famous church dome everyone wants for their album. It’s smaller than it looks in photos. Then we zigzagged up to Profitis Ilias Monastery at the very top of Santorini. The wind up there is something else; it actually made my eyes water (maybe it was the view too). You can see both sides of the island at once—sea on either side and Pyrgos spilling down below like a pile of sugar cubes. Kostas told us monks still live up here; one waved from a garden patch but didn’t say much.

Pyrgos itself felt slower—a few old men playing backgammon outside a café, someone hanging laundry near the old Venetian castle walls. There’s this earthy smell from wood fires and herbs growing wild along the path. We stopped for a quick coffee (Greek style: strong enough to wake anyone). After that came Akrotiri—the prehistoric site is cooler than I thought, with walkways above ancient rooms and faded frescoes behind glass. Our guide Maria explained how people here had plumbing before Rome did. She laughed when I mispronounced “Thera”—I’m still not sure I got it right.

The last stretch took us past Red Beach—red cliffs so bright they almost hurt your eyes in midday sun—and finally Perissa Beach with its black sand that gets hot under bare feet (bring sandals). Some folks swam; I just watched kids chasing waves while we finished our bottled water and tried not to get sand everywhere in the van. The whole day felt like skipping between postcards but with all the little things—the smells, Kostas’ stories, how salty my skin felt by late afternoon—that don’t fit in any photo. Even now I catch myself thinking about that first quiet moment in Oia.
