The experience

You're picked up from your hotel or cruise port and the driver (a local who knows which roads avoid the afternoon crowds) heads straight into the island's interior. The air-conditioned car winds through the countryside toward Oia, and you start to see why people come here. Whitewashed buildings, blue domes catching the light, the caldera dropping away below. Oia is the famous one, the postcard village, and yes, it's crowded by mid-morning, but your driver knows the quieter corners and the angles that work for photos without waiting in line behind fifty other people.

From there, the route flexes to what you want. Some travelers head to Imerovigli, perched at the highest point on the caldera rim. The views from up there are the kind you stare at for a while without talking. Others go straight to the Red Beach on the southern coast, where the volcanic cliffs actually are that shade of rust and crimson, and the black sand at Perissa–Perivolos stretches long enough that you can swim or eat lunch at one of the seaside restaurants without feeling rushed. The driver can drop you for a couple of hours and pick you up after, or you can keep moving. Profitis Ilias, the monastery at 567 meters, sits at the island's highest point. Wine tastings at Santo Wines or the Wine Museum Koutsogiannopoulos aren't included in the tour price, you pay separately at the winery, but both are stops your driver can arrange.
