experience

What’s the experience like?

We kicked off our Santorini day with a drive up to Oia—early enough that the streets were still quiet except for a few cats stretching in the sun. The blue domes really do pop against the white houses, and our guide Maria pointed out a bakery where locals grab koulouri in the morning. I snapped a photo from an alley most people walk right past; it’s got that postcard angle but without the crowds.

Next up was Firostefani. You’ve probably seen its blue-domed church on travel posters everywhere. In person, it’s smaller than I expected, but there’s something peaceful about standing there with the caldera in the background. The breeze carried a hint of sea salt—hard to describe, but you’ll notice it too.

The road twisted through vineyards as we climbed to Profitis Ilias, Santorini’s highest point. Up top, you get this wild 360-degree view—the whole island laid out below. We ducked into St. Nectarius church (the incense smell lingers) and tried some local honey made by monks. There’s also capers and sun-dried tomatoes for sale; I grabbed a jar for later.

By midday we reached Perissa’s Black Beach. The sand gets hot fast—bring sandals! There are little tavernas right on the shore; we picked one called “Tranquilo” for grilled octopus and cold Mythos beer. If you’re up for it, the water is clear and surprisingly refreshing even in late spring.

Last stop: an underground wine museum tucked inside old pumice caves. It’s cool inside—literally—and you can see all these old wooden presses and tools from centuries ago. The winemaker explained how volcanic soil shapes Santorini wines (Assyrtiko is their pride). We tasted three different wines at the end; my favorite was the sweet Vinsanto. Afterward, we headed back to our hotel with a couple of bottles clinking in our bag.
