The experience

The tour moves through Mount of Ainos and stops at the Monastery of St. Gerasimos, the sacred site where the island's patron saint is honored and where many Kefalonian children are named. From there, you head to the Kefalonian Robola Producers cooperative in the Omala area, which makes nearly 70 percent of the island's robola grapes annually. You taste their reds, whites and rosés at your own pace: no rush, no group schedule to keep.

Two cave systems anchor the middle of the day. Drogarati Cave, revealed by an earthquake over 300 years ago, holds orange and yellow stalactites hanging like curtains and stalagmites rising from the floor across spacious chambers carved over 150 million years. Melissani cave-lake sits inside a B-shaped cavern with a small island, trees and forests surrounding an underground lake. One chamber is sun-lit, the other dark and draped with stalagmites and moss. You also pass through Aghia Efimia, a fishing village on the east coast with a sheltered harbor, before the tour ends at a photo stop overlooking Myrtos Beach.

Because this is a private tour, the itinerary can be adjusted to match what you want to see. The minivan is air-conditioned, and the driver speaks English. Pickup and drop-off happen at your hotel or port, depending on which option you choose: Argostoli and Lassi, Skala and Kateleios, or Lixouri and Xi.
