The Experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and heads to Argostoli's Fanari lighthouse, built by Governor Napier during the British occupation. From there, the route follows the geological spine of the island: Katavothres sinkholes, where seawater vanishes into the rocks and reappears underground at Melissani Lake, then Drogarati Cave, a 150-million-year-old cavern 60 meters deep with stalactites and stalagmites. The cave stays at 18 degrees Celsius year-round. At Melissani Lake, you board a small boat that takes you into the closed section of the cave, where daylight streams through a collapsed roof opening and the water shows its deep blue. The boatman points out rock formations that resemble dolphins.

The afternoon shifts to the coast. You swim at Antisamos Beach, 30 kilometers east of Argostoli, then pass through Karavomilos, a fishing village with a narrow shingle beach and views toward Ithaca, and Agia Efimia, a bay village with taverns and shops. The tour stops at Divarata, a small village above Myrtos Beach, for refreshments and souvenirs. At Myrtos itself—the famous viewpoint above the beach—the driver uses a drone to photograph you and the turquoise water below. The final stops are Assos Village, set on a mountain with a castle above it, and Fiscardo, the traditional village that survived the great earthquake intact, where you can stay for dinner or lunch and visit the old Venetian lighthouse.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and carries sun umbrellas, beach mats, bottled water, sandwiches, sesame bars, fruit juices and wine. The tour runs 7.5 hours and includes hotel pickup. Entrance fees for Melissani Cave and Drogarati Cave are separate (13 euros each). Children from age 1 are welcome, and specialized infant seats are available.
