The experience
You get picked up from your hotel and travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a multilingual guide who can tailor the day to what you want to see. The driver carries a drone and will photograph you at the viewpoint above Myrtos Beach: the world-famous photo spot where the beach sits in a crescent between limestone cliffs. You stop at Divarata village above the beach for refreshments and souvenirs before heading down to the water.
Melissani Lake is the centerpiece: you buy a ticket at the site (not included), then take a boat for roughly 30 minutes through the cave's interior, passing the islet where archaeologists have worked and pointing out stalactites shaped like dolphins. The water is brackish, fed by underground springs from across the island. Daylight pours through an opening in the cave roof that collapsed thousands of years ago, turning the water a deep blue. Drogarati Cave, discovered 300 years ago and opened to the public in 1963, sits 60 meters deep with stalactites and stalagmites roughly 150 million years old. The constant temperature is 18 degrees Celsius, so bring a light layer.
At Myrtos Beach you swim or relax at the beach bar with a drink. The tour provides sun umbrellas and beach mats. The beach has won awards for cleanliness and appears regularly in international travel magazines. You also pass Karavomilos, a small fishing village with a shingle beach and views toward Ithaca, and Agia Efimia, a peaceful traditional harbor town 31.5 kilometers northeast of Argostoli with tavernas and shops along the bay.
