The wood oven is where the cooking happens: outdoors, in the hills, with Androniki teaching you the moves.

A four-hour cooking class in a Rethymno home on Crete where you learn to make traditional Greek appetizers, mains and desserts using a wood oven, homegrown vegetables and homemade olive oil, then eat everything you've cooked with wine and Raki. The class is taught in English or Greek by your host Androniki, and recipes go home with you.

The experience

The cooking takes place outside around Androniki's wood oven in the hills above Rethymno. You'll make a run of dishes: cheese pies, kremidokalitsouna (onion pies), chortopites (wild greens pies), sfakianes pites (cheese pies), Greek salad, dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves), moussaka, and giouvetsi (rooster with orzo), using vegetables Androniki grows herself and olive oil she makes at home. The instruction is hands-on: she shows you the technique for each dish, and you do the work. Nothing is plated and served to you. You're building the meal you'll eat.

After cooking wraps, you sit down together to the food you've made. The spread includes red wine, white wine, and Raki: a homemade spirit Androniki and her husband produce that carries a real kick. Expect plenty of food, traditional Greek hospitality, and the kind of company that comes from cooking side by side. You leave with the recipes written down so you can remake these dishes in your own kitchen.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Greek.

What dishes do I actually learn to cook in this class?

You make cheese pies, kremidokalitsouna (small onion pies), chortopites (wild greens pies), sfakianes pites (cheese pies), Greek salad, dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves), moussaka, and giouvetsi (rooster with orzo cooked in the wood oven). The menu shifts with the season and what Androniki has on hand, but these are the core dishes you'll work through.

Do I need cooking experience to join this class?

No. Androniki teaches the fundamentals of each dish using her home techniques, so beginners learn the same way as anyone else. The point is learning to cook like a local, not proving you already know how.

What happens if I have a food allergy or dietary restriction?

Tell Androniki about any allergy, intolerance or special diet when you book. She needs to know before the class so she can adjust the menu and ingredients. The full address and her contact details will be on your confirmation voucher.

Is this class in English?

Yes, Androniki teaches in English or Greek, so you can choose. The class runs four hours from start to finish, including the cooking and the meal afterward.
