Cook a Cretan meal from ingredients you harvest yourself

A cooking class in Krousonas village, Crete, where you start on a working farm, feed the animals and gather vegetables, then prepare a seasonal Cretan dish and eat it together. The lesson runs about four hours and includes refreshments, your choice of menu (vegan or not), and all the instruction you need to learn the fundamentals of Cretan cuisine.

The experience

The class begins in Krousonas village with a welcome of local Cretan delights and refreshments, then moves straight to the farm. You'll feed the goats and sheep, and if you're there in summer, you can try milking the goats yourself. The animals here are part of the daily work, not a staged attraction, and the time on the farm sets up everything that comes next.

Once you've spent time with the animals, you walk into the orchard to cut the vegetables and fruit you'll cook with. The operator grows these organically, and you'll learn what's in season and how to pick it. You can explore the land, breathe the air, and understand where the food actually comes from before you touch a knife. Depending on the season, you may also watch cheese being made on site.

Back in the kitchen area (which sits under the shade of grapevines). You prepare your meal from scratch. You choose your menu ahead of time from seasonal options: you might make zucchini balls, tzatziki, fried snails with rosemary, slow-cooked lamb with pasta, Cretan pilaf, stuffed vegetables, honey dumplings, or rice pudding made with goat milk from the animals you just met. The instructor walks you through the techniques and the "secrets of Cretan cuisine," and when the food is ready, you eat it on the veranda with a view. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. The work is real, not theatrical.

What’s included

  • Welcome refreshments and Cretan delights.
  • coffee and tea.
  • snacks and beverages throughout the class.
  • all instruction and use of kitchen tools.
  • the meal you cook and eat together on the veranda.
