Three Crete beaches in one boat: turquoise lagoon, pirate island, and golden sand

You swim in the turquoise shallows of Balos Lagoon for two hours, hike to a Venetian fortress on Gramvousa Island or snorkel a shipwreck, and finish at Falasarna Beach with golden sand and open water. The boat includes snorkeling gear, Cretan food, wine, beer, and water — you just show up at the dock and the captain handles the rest.

The Experience

"The water here, it doesn't look real until you're in it," our captain said as we pulled away from Falasarna. He wasn't exaggerating. The private boat trip to Balos Lagoon hits different when you're not fighting for space with fifty other tourists — you arrive early enough to have the shallow turquoise water almost to yourself, at least for the first hour. The lagoon sits like something from a postcard that somehow exists: soft white sand, water so clear you see the bottom ten meters out, and those wild rock formations rising up around you like the island forgot to finish them. You get time to swim, snorkel if you brought a mask (or use the equipment provided), or just float and let the color of the water do the work.

After Balos, the boat heads to Gramvousa Island, and this is where the trip splits depending on what you want. The Venetian fortress sits 137 meters up, a 20-minute hike that's steep but short — the views from the top are the kind you remember years later, the whole Aegean laid out below you. If climbing isn't your thing, the island has its own beach and a shipwreck you can snorkel around, which is genuinely eerie in the best way. You get an hour and fifteen minutes here, which is enough to do the hike and swim after, or to skip the fortress entirely and just float in the water. The island used to be a pirate hideout, and you can feel that history in the rocks and the isolation.

The final stop is Falasarna Beach itself, where the boat started — fifty minutes to swim in the open water, walk the long golden sand, or just sit and watch the horizon. By this point you've had Cretan dakos (barley rusk with tomato, local cheese, olive oil) and wine or beer on board, so there's a rhythm to the day that feels earned. The whole trip is private, meaning your group only, which changes how it feels — no schedule pressure, no crowd noise, just the sound of the engine and the water.

Top questions

How long is the boat trip total?

The full day is roughly 6–7 hours from pickup to return, with about 2 hours at Balos, 1 hour 15 minutes at Gramvousa, and 50 minutes at Falasarna.

Is the hike to the Venetian fortress difficult?

It's a 20-minute uphill walk to 137 meters elevation. Not technical, but steep. You can skip it and swim at the island's beach instead.

What's included in the meal?

Cretan dakos (barley rusk with tomato, local cheese, olive oil, and oregano), plus beer, wine, soda, and bottled water throughout the day.

Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?

No — snorkeling equipment is provided on the boat. Bring your own if you prefer, but it's not necessary.

Is this suitable for non-swimmers?

Yes. You can stay on the boat, relax on the beach, or wade in the shallow water at Balos. The lagoon is very shallow near shore.

What time does the boat leave?

Pickup times vary by hotel location. The boat departs from Falasarna in the morning; confirm your exact pickup when you book.

Can I do the fortress hike if I'm not very fit?

The hike is short (20 minutes) but steep. If you have concerns about your fitness, you can explore the island's beach and shipwreck instead.
