The experience
The 11-meter speedboat leaves Falassarna and reaches Balos in half an hour. You'll have roughly an hour in the lagoon itself. The water is so shallow and warm that families with small children find it ideal, and in many places the sand has a pinkish tint from millions of crushed shells. Swim, snorkel with the gear provided, or simply float in water so clear you can see the bottom. The boat crew stays on hand with cold drinks and whatever assistance you need.
Gramvousa island sits just across the water. You'll spend an hour there exploring the Venetian fortress that still stands at 137 meters above the beach: a structure that later served pirates, and according to local legend, marks the spot where treasure was buried. An abandoned ship wreck near the shore has become part of the landscape over the years. The views from the fort reach across the water back toward the mainland.
On the return to Falassarna, the boat makes stops timed to catch the sunset. The whole outing runs about six hours from departure to dock.
