The Corinth Canal & Two Thousand Years of Ruins in One Afternoon

You get picked up from your hotel, driven to the Corinth Canal for photos and context, then spend time exploring the ancient city's temples and forum at your own pace before climbing Acrocorinth for the views. Lunch and wine tasting are optional, and your driver handles all the navigation so you don't have to rent a car or figure out the route yourself.

5h–6h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Pickup from Athens hotel
  • Travel along coast to Corinth
  • Stop to see Corinth Canal
  • Explore ancient Corinth archaeological site
  • Visit Acrocorinth hilltop fortress
  • Optional lunch with Greek dishes

The Experience

Your driver picks you up from your Athens hotel in an air-conditioned car or minivan, and within an hour you're standing at the Corinth Canal—that narrow, almost surreal 19th-century cut that splits two seas. The Saronic Gulf sits on one side, the Ionian on the other, and the walls drop so steeply that ships passing through look like they're threading a needle. Most people stop for photos here, and it's worth lingering. The scale of it hits different when you're standing at the edge.

Then you head to the archaeological site of ancient Corinth itself. This was a trading city that mattered—it sat at the crossroads where southern and northern Greece met, and the ruins show it: temples, a bathhouse, a forum, a theater. Your driver knows the history but stays in the car; you walk the site at your own pace. The bema is there too, a stone platform where St. Paul is believed to have stood before judges, which adds a layer if you're interested in that thread. The sun can be intense, so the bottled water they provide actually gets used.

Acrocorinth comes next—the acropolis perched on top of the hill, with traces of the temple of Aphrodite still visible. The views over the Saronic Gulf from up there are the kind you don't forget, and the walk around the ruins is manageable even if you're not training for anything. After that, there's an optional stop for lunch where you can eat Greek traditional dishes and try local wine, or you can skip it and head back to Athens. The whole thing runs about five to six hours door-to-door, which means you're back in the city by late afternoon.
