The experience

You arrive at your host Nadia's home kitchen in Cologne ready to cook. She meets you a few days before to learn what you eat and what you want to make, then builds the menu around your preferences. On the day, you work through three dishes: kartoffelkloße (German potato dumplings) or laugenknödel (pretzel dumplings), a sauce to go with them, and bratäpfel. Baked apples with amaretti and poppy seed filling, served with cardamom zabaione. Nothing is plated for you to watch. You make it all, handling the ingredients and techniques yourself while she guides you through the steps.

If you add the farmers market tour, you spend an extra hour to ninety minutes walking through a neighborhood market with Nadia, meeting the vendors and picking out the produce you'll cook with. She knows the stalls and the farmers, and the tour becomes part of the story of what ends up on your plate. Without the market, you go straight to the kitchen. Either way, you sit down to eat what you made, with a glass of local beer included. The meal can happen indoors or, when the weather and light allow, in the communal garden outside.

Nadia draws on her childhood in Singapore, years in Rome and her life in Cologne to shape how she cooks German food: unexpected ingredients, techniques that blend her travels into local recipes. After you eat, she emails you the recipes so you can make them again at home. Her partner is there, and they have a medium-sized dog who will try to convince you he needs more food than he does.

Is this one for you?Book this if you have a free afternoon in Cologne and want to learn to cook German food in a real kitchen, not watch a demonstration. The small group size, up to four people, means Nadia can focus on you and adjust the pace to your skill level. If you add the market tour, you'll see where the ingredients come from before you cook with them, which deepens the whole experience.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Italian.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years); Infant (under 5): free.

Can I choose what we cook, or does Nadia decide the menu?

Nadia customizes the menu to your dietary preferences and what you want to learn. She contacts you a few days before the class to plan the meal together, so you have input on the dishes.

What if I have dietary restrictions like gluten-free or vegan?

Nadia accommodates lactose-free, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan diets when you let her know at booking. Tell her your needs upfront and she'll adapt the recipes.

Do I need cooking experience to join this class?

No experience is required. You make three dishes from scratch with Nadia guiding you through each step, so she teaches as you go.

What's included in the price, and what costs extra?

The class includes the cooking instruction, all ingredients for the three dishes, the meal you eat afterward, and a glass of local beer. If you book the market tour add-on, that's included too. You pay one price for whichever option you choose at checkout.

Is the farmers market tour worth adding, or can I skip it?

The market tour adds one to one and a half hours and takes you through a neighborhood market with Nadia, where you meet vendors and shop for the ingredients you'll cook with. If you want to spend more time with her and see where the food comes from, add it. If you'd rather go straight to cooking, the class works without it.
