Three breweries, three Kölsch tastings, one afternoon learning why Cologne's beer and its people are inseparable.

The Legendary Kölsch Brewery Tour is a guided 2–3 hour tour of Cologne's Old Town breweries where you taste Kölsch at three stops, learn the strict brewing traditions and regulations that govern the beer, and hear the stories of the people and places that made it. The tour runs in English or German with a live guide who is also a passionate Kölsch drinker; minimum age is 18.

2h–3h

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Cologne's Kölsch beer culture

  • Meet and introduction
  • First Kölsch tasting and brewery story
  • Visit famous square and surroundings
  • Sample oldest Kölsch and brewing rules
  • Explore Cologne Old Town history
  • Brief look at important church
  • Second Kölsch tasting at Peters Brauhaus
  • Learn where to drink and pay
  • Final Kölsch tasting at bierhaus

The Experience

You meet your group in the Old Town and get a brief rundown of the afternoon ahead. From there the guide takes you into the beer itself—starting at one brewery with your first Kölsch, learning the traditions and rules of how to drink it, and hearing about the famous American who became part of that brewery's story. Between stops you'll walk through the most famous square in Cologne and past one of the city's most important churches, picking up pieces of how the Old Town came to be what it is.

The second and third Kölsch come at two more breweries, each with its own character and claim to the title. At one you'll learn about the strict brewing process and the regulations that still govern who is even allowed to call their beer Kölsch—a debate that has shaped the city's beer culture for centuries. At another, the guide will tell you about the folk hero who oversees the bar and what makes that brewery the arch-rival in tradition to the others. By the end you'll have tasted what many consider the oldest Kölsch in Cologne, the largest brewery in the Altstadt, and the Mühlen and Päffgen varieties, and you'll know where to drink and how much to pay when you come back on your own.

The guide speaks English or German and knows the beer and the city in the way only someone who drinks it regularly can. Public transportation is nearby if you need it, and the pace is built for all fitness levels—this is about standing, talking and tasting, not hiking or climbing.

Top questions

What exactly is Kölsch and why is it such a big deal in Cologne?

Kölsch is a light, crisp beer brewed only in Cologne under strict regulations that dictate everything from ingredients to fermentation—so strictly that there's an ongoing debate about which breweries are even allowed to call their beer Kölsch. On the tour you'll taste three versions and learn the rules and traditions that make it the beer of the city.

How many breweries do we visit and how many beers are included?

The tour stops at four breweries across Cologne's Old Town, and three Kölsch tastings are included—one at each of the first three stops, leaving you free to order more at the last brewery if you want to.

Is this tour just about beer, or do we learn about Cologne itself?

The beer is the thread, but the guide weaves in the history and character of the Old Town—you'll walk past the most famous square and one of the city's most important churches, and hear anecdotes about how Cologne became what it is and why the beer and the people are tied together.

How long does the tour take and what's the pace like?

The tour runs 2 to 3 hours and is suitable for all fitness levels—you're walking between breweries and standing at bars, not climbing or hiking, so the pace is relaxed and built around tasting and talking.

What language is the tour in?

The tour is led by a live guide in either English or German—you choose which one when you book.

Is there a minimum age or any reason I shouldn't book this?

The tour is for guests 18 and older only. It's not recommended for pregnant travelers, but it's suitable for all other fitness levels.
