The experience
Belvedere Lookout opens the tour with a panoramic view framing Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay, with Mount Rotui's slopes rising above the turquoise lagoon. The guide shares the island's history and culture as the vehicle moves through the landscape. A stop at a Polynesian juice and liquor factory lets you sample local juices and rums, then the route follows Cook's Bay itself, where sailing boats rest in calm water and a viewpoint captures the bay's dramatic peaks.
Ta'ahiamanu Beach is a white sand stop with coral formations visible through clear water. Swimmers can enter if they choose, and small fish sometimes approach in the shallows. The tour also includes an ancient open-air marae temple, a spiritual site central to Polynesian tradition. Optional additions are Tiki Village Cultural Centre, which holds Polynesian buildings, local dance performances, Paul Gauguin and Bounty exhibitions and a pearl shop; a Catholic church built in 1897 with mountain views; and Papetoai village, home to the oldest Protestant church in the Southern Hemisphere. Opunohu Valley offers a photo stop framed by Shark's Tooth mountain.
The guide is included, as is the air-conditioned vehicle and tastings of local products. If you add lunch, a beachside restaurant at Hotel Les Tipaniers serves a meal overlooking the lagoon and a nearby motu island. The Rotui Juice Factory closes weekends, so weekend tours substitute another attraction, often Ta'ahiamanu Beach for swimming. Weather or road conditions may prevent access to some stops, and the operator offers alternatives to keep the day on track. Ferry tickets from Papeete and taxi transfers to the ferry terminal are your responsibility.
