The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the way the light bounced off the black sand—almost blue in the morning, not quite what I expected from Tahiti. Our guide, Manu, waved as we climbed into the van (air conditioning was a relief, honestly). He started talking about how his grandmother used to swim at this exact beach when she was a kid. You could hear the waves and sometimes a rooster from somewhere behind the trees. The air smelled faintly sweet, like flowers and salt mixed together.
We stopped at this old lighthouse—paint peeling a little—and Manu pointed out some graffiti that apparently tells its own story if you know how to read it. Then it was off to Faarumai Waterfalls. It’s only a five-minute walk but I still managed to get my shoes muddy (should’ve worn sandals). The water crashed down so loud that for a second we all just stood there not saying anything. There were these tiny ferns growing on the rocks, bright green against all that dark stone. I remember thinking I’d never seen that shade before.
Arahoho Blowhole came next—Manu told us to cover our ears right before it went off and yeah, he wasn’t kidding. The spray caught me by surprise and I laughed like an idiot. There’s a little bay nearby where everything suddenly felt quiet again, except for one fisherman who nodded at us but didn’t say anything. We finished up in this tropical garden full of flowers I couldn’t name (Manu tried teaching me one in Tahitian; I definitely butchered it). By then the sun was starting to get heavy and my shirt stuck to my back, but honestly, I didn’t mind. Sometimes you just want to feel where you are.
