The experience
Your guide structures the day around the island's natural and human history rather than a checklist of views. You'll start from a vantage point Cook called One Tree Hill, then move to Matavai Bay (the black sand beach where European navigators first landed) to understand how that arrival changed Tahitian life. The commentary weaves in how the government works, what the main industries are, and the taxes that fund the island, so you're not just seeing the landscape but understanding how people live in it now.
The centerpiece is Faarumai Waterfalls, where you walk to the base of a 100-meter permanent waterfall in rainforest. This is one of roughly 130 waterfalls across Tahiti and Moorea, and the valley shows how Polynesians live when they're outside the urban areas. From there you visit Vaipahi waterfall gardens, once forbidden for daily use in Tahitian burial rituals, now open to the public with tropical flowers, water lilies, koi and sacred freshwater eels. A stop at a black sand beach popular with local surfers and the high school's surf lessons gives you a view of the mountains the way residents see them, not as a postcard. The tour ends at Vaipoiri cave, formed by an old lava flow and now filled with cool fresh water where locals swim.
Pickup time depends on where you're staying and where other passengers are located, so you'll be contacted closer to the date. The tour requires a minimum of four passengers to run. If numbers fall short, you'll be notified. Bottled water is included. Snacks are available for purchase at the market stop.
