Summary

Matavai Bay waterfalls marae & surf towns in one day

You’ll feel Tahiti Nui with all your senses—walk black sand beaches at Matavai Bay, hear waterfall spray in hidden valleys, taste fresh fruit shared by locals, and touch ancient marae stones deep in the forest. With a local guide leading each stop and snacks along the way, this tour leaves you with more than photos.

experience

What’s the experience like?

Ever wondered what Tahiti really smells like? I didn’t expect the air to be so thick with flowers when we first stepped out at Matavai Bay. Our guide, Moana, grinned when he saw me close my eyes and just breathe for a second—he said that’s how you know you’re really here. We wandered over black sand that stuck to our sandals (it gets everywhere, but I kind of loved it) and listened to stories about Captain Cook anchoring right there centuries ago. The lighthouse looked almost shy against all that wild green.

The drive inland was quieter than I thought it’d be—just us, some distant rooster calls, and the hum of the van’s air-conditioning. When we reached the waterfalls (the “Three Cascades,” Moana called them), the spray felt cold on my arms. There were families picnicking nearby, laughing in French and Tahitian. I tried to say “mauruuru” (thank you) when someone handed me a slice of pineapple; Li laughed at my accent but hey, free fruit is free fruit. The hike was short but muddy—bring old shoes if you can.

I still think about those ancient marae stones. They’re just there in the forest, half-swallowed by roots and moss. Moana told us about old ceremonies—his voice dropped low like we might wake something up if we weren’t careful. After that, we stopped at a garden where everything seemed too green to be real. And then caves—cool air, echoing drips—it made me want to whisper even though nobody else was around.

We finished near Papara’s surf beaches where teenagers practiced on waves that looked way too big for beginners (but what do I know). The wind picked up and carried this salty tang through the van windows as we crossed from Tahiti Nui to Tahiti Iti—the passage is bigger than it looks on any map. Snacks came out again (I ate more than my share), and honestly? I could’ve stayed another hour just watching the light change over the water.
