The experience
The day starts at a marae, an ancient stone temple where Tainui walks you through the creation stories of the Polynesian world, the social structure of the people and the spiritual rites that once took place there. From there you move to freshwater caves: natural pools carved into the rock, serene now but layered with both joyful and tragic histories. The route then reaches Teahupo'o, an iconic surf spot on Tahiti's north shore, where you meet local craftspeople, taste their work and hear the anecdotes behind it.
A sacred valley opens next, a place rooted in ancestral spiritual beliefs where you walk among local flora and fauna: trees, flowers, a waterfall, fish ponds and, if the day allows, the iconic eel that lives there. The tour then takes you to a beach on the Tahitian peninsula, its turquoise lagoon framing the legendary exploits of its namesake hero. Lunch happens here, feet in the sand, with the option to swim or simply sit in the shade. The road ends at kilometre 0, where Teahupo'o rises as both the birthplace of island legends and the site of the 2024 Olympic surfing competition. Tainui reserves the final moments for whatever the sky allows: the most beautiful surprises the day can offer.
This is not folklore tourism. Tainui built Ta'ati Fenua (ta'ati meaning to join, bind, unite) to welcome travelers as friends rather than audiences. The guide's knowledge comes from elders and from the literature of Tahitian history, woven together as a single narrative. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with luggage space, and the day runs nine to ten hours from pickup to return.
