Book your canyon adventure in the Vercors foothills now.★ 5.00 (14)3h€ 79View › You sort of blink and there’s the Vercors massif towering over you, green and a bit wild, not what I expected so close to Grenoble. Our guide—Julien, who had that easy French humor—handed out thick wetsuits that smelled faintly like river water and neoprene. He checked our helmets twice, which made me trust him immediately. The air was cool but not cold; you could hear water tumbling somewhere below us. I felt a bit nervous about canyoning, honestly—I’m not exactly fearless when it comes to heights or cold rivers.
We started down into the Versoud canyon, just thirty minutes from town but it felt much further from anything familiar. The rocks were slick underfoot and my hands kept brushing mossy patches that left a greenish smear on my fingers. Julien showed us how to abseil down the first waterfall—my heart was pounding so hard I almost missed his instructions, but he waited until I was ready. There were natural slides carved smooth by years of water (my shorts still have a weird scratchy spot), and at one point someone tried a zip line across a pool and landed with such a splash we all laughed for five minutes straight.
I didn’t think I’d try any jumps, but standing above the water with everyone cheering quietly (not in that fake way), I just… did it. Not graceful, but hey—it counts. The river was icy at first touch but you get used to it fast, especially moving all the time. There were options for bigger jumps if you wanted (I passed), but nothing was ever forced—Julien kept saying “only if you feel it.” That stuck with me.
The whole canyoning trip took maybe three and a half hours? Time got weird down there between waterfalls and sunlight flickering through leaves overhead. We ended up back at the start muddy, tired, grinning like idiots. My legs were shaky in that good way after something new. Sometimes I still hear the sound of water echoing off those stone walls when things get too quiet at home.
