The experience

You meet your guide at the Saint Gervais car park and gear up with quality equipment: 5mm neoprene wetsuit, neoprene socks, harness, helmet and optional shoes. After a short quarter-hour walk to reach the river, your guide briefs you on the techniques you'll use during the descent. Then you enter the Ecouges canyon itself: a concentrate of abseiling, jumps and slides that make up one of the most beautiful canyoning courses in the Vercors.

The descent is built around what you do with your own body and the equipment: you abseil down rock faces, jump into pools, and slide down natural water chutes. Your guide stays with you throughout, managing safety and pacing. The canyon itself is the teacher: each section builds on the last, and the guide's briefing at the start covers everything you need to move through it. Individual accident insurance is included, and the guide carries photos of the activity to send you afterward.

The half-day and full-day options let you choose how much time to spend in the canyon. Either way, the route stays the same. The difference is how many passes through sections you make and how much time you spend at each pool or slide. Both options start and end at the Saint Gervais car park.
