The Experience
I didn’t expect to lose track of time in a gallery, but that’s what happened at Frameless Lates in London. We’d barely stepped inside when the walls started moving: Van Gogh’s sunflowers swirling right past my shoulder, Hokusai’s waves rolling across the floor. The whole place smelled faintly like citrus and something sweet from the bar (I think it was the gin fizz everyone kept ordering). People were laughing softly, just wandering between rooms, faces lit up by all that color. It felt nothing like a regular museum night: more like being inside someone else’s dream.
Our tickets got us into all four galleries (they check at the door but it’s quick), and there were a few new digital pieces from UK artists I hadn’t heard of. One room was so quiet except for this low bass rumble. Someone said it was Soho Radio doing the soundtrack. I remember standing there with my friend Li, both of us just staring at these impossible brushstrokes that kept changing every time we blinked. She tried to explain one of the projections to me but gave up halfway through and we just laughed. Sometimes you don’t need words for this stuff.
The staff were easygoing about everything, even when I nearly spilled my drink trying to take a photo (sorry again). It was mostly locals and a few tourists. Everyone seemed happy to just hang out and soak it in. By midnight, we were still there, not really wanting to leave yet. I still think about how strange and good it felt walking out onto the street after all that light and sound: like London itself had gotten brighter somehow.
