The Experience
The first thing I remember is the cold stone under my shoes as we waited outside the Tower of London — not quite awake, but already a little giddy. Our guide, Sarah, handed out maps and grinned like she’d done this a hundred times but still loved it. She pointed out Traitors’ Gate and told us how prisoners would come through there, which gave me goosebumps. You could smell wet grass from the moat and hear crows somewhere overhead. It felt like being backstage before a play starts.
Then suddenly we were inside, following a real Yeoman Warder (he said just call him “Beefeater Dave”) through a side door while everything was still locked up tight. The Beefeater Opening Ceremony wasn’t what I expected — it’s not flashy, just this steady march and keys turning in heavy locks, but you feel every bit of it. Dave’s uniform looked almost too perfect for that hour. He joked about his hat itching (“don’t tell the Queen”) and showed us how they check each gate. I caught myself holding my breath when they swung open the main doors.
After that, straight to the Jewel House — no crowds yet, just us and those impossible Crown Jewels glittering in glass cases. The Imperial State Crown is smaller than I thought but so bright it almost hurt my eyes (or maybe that was just lack of coffee). Someone whispered about 2,800 diamonds; I honestly lost count after three. We had time to look close without anyone nudging us along. It’s strange how quiet it feels in there when you’re first in.
The rest of the day was ours — we wandered through the White Tower and tried out some old spiral stairs (my knees are still mad at me), listened to stories on the audio guide app whenever we wanted. There’s something about seeing places like Tower Green before everyone else shows up; you notice things you’d miss otherwise, like carvings on stone or how cold it gets in shadowed corners. I still think about that silent moment by the Thames ramparts before London woke up.
