What happens when paintings move around you instead of staying still on a wall

You walk through four galleries of immersive projections featuring 42 artworks by Monet, Van Gogh, Dalí, Rembrandt and others, with motion-tracking that lets you interact with abstract art using your own body. Entry to all four galleries and café access are included. If you go Friday or Saturday evenings (Lates, 6–10pm, adults only), you get a Soho Radio soundtrack and can bring a drink into the galleries with you.

The Experience

Sunlight floods across a canvas the size of a building. You step forward and the brushstrokes ripple. A Monet water lily dissolves into motion, and suddenly you're standing inside the painting rather than looking at it from three feet away behind velvet rope. That's the first shock at Frameless, London's immersive art experience near Marble Arch — the artworks don't hang. They surround you, move with you, and respond when you move. The four galleries each work differently. In Colour in Motion, motion-tracking technology picks up your gestures and lets you paint with your own body across abstract compositions. In The World Around Us, 360-degree projections of oceans, cities and volcanoes wrap around you completely. Beyond Reality pulls you into dreamlike Dalí and surreal spaces where the floor and walls blur. The Art of Abstraction is a digital maze where shapes and forms bleed through fabric panels as you walk through, never quite the same twice.

The whole thing takes about two to three hours depending on how long you linger in each gallery, and there's no fixed route — you move at your own pace. The experience includes entry to all four galleries and access to the in-house Café Bar, where you can grab a coffee, a drink or something to eat. If you're going on a Friday or Saturday evening, Frameless Lates runs from 6pm to 10pm (last entry 8pm) and is adults-only — 18 and over. That version comes with a curated soundtrack from Soho Radio playing through the galleries, and you're welcome to bring a drink from the café with you as you walk through. The space is fully wheelchair accessible, prams and strollers work fine, and the experience suits all fitness levels. There is moving imagery and shifting light throughout, but no strobe lighting, so it won't catch you off guard if you're sensitive to that.

Getting there is straightforward — Marble Arch station is minutes away, and there are plenty of transport options nearby. The whole setup feels less like a museum and more like walking into someone's dream of what art could be if it wasn't trapped behind glass. You're not standing still studying a painting. You're inside it.
