The experience

The tour starts with a drive from Hurghada to Luxor, where you'll spend the first day on the East Bank. Karnak Temple is the centerpiece: three main temples and several smaller ones spread across 247 acres, built over generations by different pharaohs. Luxor Temple follows, built largely by Amenhotep III and Rameses II as the setting for the Festival of Opet, where rituals reconciled the human ruler with divine office. In the evening, you have the option to attend the Sound and Light Show at Karnak, which narrates the achievements of the great pharaohs through a historical account of Thebes and the temple's artistic treasures.

You'll check into a 3-star hotel for the night (upgradeable at an extra cost). The second day takes you across the Nile to the West Bank, where the tombs and monuments are concentrated. The Valley of the Kings was the final resting place of Egypt's rulers from the 18th to the 20th dynasty, including Ramses II and Tutankhamen. You'll visit three tombs with well-preserved interior decoration (entry to Tutankhamen's tomb costs an additional 200 Egyptian pounds). Hatshepsut Temple rises in three terraces from the desert plain, merging with the limestone cliffs of the Theban Mountain. The Colossi of Memnon (two massive quartzite sandstone statues of Amenhotep III, each rising about 18 meters) are the only remains of what was once the largest temple complex on the West Bank.

Transport is private throughout, in an air-conditioned vehicle with your own guide. Breakfast, bottled water and all entry fees are included. The guide speaks English, Italian, French or German depending on your preference. After the second day's sightseeing, you'll be driven back to Hurghada.
