The Experience

The air out there is dry and a little dusty, but it smells faintly sweet from some vendor’s tea nearby. Hossam led us up close—closer than I’d expected—to these giant blocks that don’t seem real until you’re touching them. He pointed out little graffiti marks from ancient workers (I never would’ve noticed), then we circled around for that classic photo spot. My partner tried to “hold” the pyramid in her hand for a picture; Hossam laughed and gave her tips on how to angle it just right. The Sphinx looked more worn than photos show—almost tired—but somehow more alive for it.

Afterwards, we headed to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. It’s cool inside—literally—and honestly a relief after Giza’s sun. The place is huge but not overwhelming; Hossam paced us through rooms filled with artifacts from every era. There’s this water clock from Amenhotep III that looks like something out of science fiction (I didn’t expect to geek out over ancient timekeeping). But what really got me was standing in front of those royal mummies. It’s quiet there, almost reverent—the kind of hush where you notice your own breathing.

By the end I felt both exhausted and weirdly peaceful. We drove back through Cairo as evening crept in, streetlights flickering on one by one. Hard to say exactly what stuck with me most—the pyramids or that moment in front of Ramses II—but I left feeling like I’d brushed up against something much bigger than myself.
