A 3-day open water diving course in Punta Cana teaches you scuba fundamentals through classroom instruction, confined water drills, and four open water dives down to 18 meters. PADI instructors guide you through dive physics, equipment use and safety procedures before you enter the turquoise water. The course includes all dive equipment, transportation and your certification card. A medical questionnaire screens for cardiovascular fitness; children from age 10 are welcome.

The Experience

The course splits into three parts. You start with online dive theory covering the physics and safety procedures you need to understand before entering the water. Then comes the confined water phase—a dedicated pool area where you practice essential skills under direct instructor supervision, learning how to use your equipment and manage your breathing underwater. Once your instructors confirm you're ready, you move to the open water dives.

The four open water dives happen in Punta Cana's reef system. You'll descend to a maximum of 18 meters (60 feet), which is the limit of your certification and the depth where you'll encounter the vibrant coral formations and tropical fish the region is known for. Your PADI instructor stays with you throughout, providing personalized attention and guidance so you can navigate the underwater landscape with confidence. By the end of the fourth dive, you'll have logged the experience needed to earn your open water certification—valid anywhere in the world.

Transportation and all dive equipment are included in the price. Instructors speak English, Spanish or French depending on your preference. The course runs over three consecutive days, so plan accordingly if you're fitting it into a longer trip to Punta Cana.
