The experience

The river does the carving here. Seven pools sit stacked down a canyon, each one fed by a waterfall and each one a different depth and temperature. You'll hike upriver to reach them, moving through green trails where the sound of water grows louder as you climb. A guide leads the way and explains the safest approach to each jump. Some are short drops into deep water, others send you sliding down smooth rock faces worn smooth by the current. The water is clear enough to see the bottom, and the pools range from quiet and deep to fast-moving and narrow.

The activity is built around what your body does, not what your eyes see. You jump from rocks that are set and tested; you slide down channels the river has shaped over years; you swim across pools to reach the next section. A life jacket and helmet come with you, and the guide stays close. The hike itself takes time (you're moving upriver against the slope), but the pools reward the climb. Lunch and seasonal fruit wait for you after the tour ends, along with water and a glass of mamajuana, a local herbal drink.

Transport leaves from your hotel lobby or from the cruise port (Gate 5 at Taino Bay or the main entrance at Amber Cove), and the drive takes about 30 minutes in an air-conditioned vehicle. Registration and a safety briefing happen when you arrive, and the guide explains the rules before you start. The whole experience runs three to four hours from start to finish, leaving your afternoon or evening free.

Is this one for you?Three to four hours means you leave your morning or afternoon open for other activities in Puerto Plata. The fitness level required is high (you're climbing upriver and jumping into water), so this suits travelers who are comfortable with physical activity and water, not a casual stroll through a park.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (8 to 11 years). Children under 8 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How many pools do you actually jump in or slide down at Damajagua?

Seven pools make up the main tour. Each one has its own character (some are deep and calm, others are faster-moving), and you jump or slide into most of them as you work your way upriver.

What's the hike like to reach the first pool?

The hike starts on green trails through tropical forest, and the sound of the river grows louder as you climb. The walk is gradual but steady, and the guide leads the way and points out the safest route to each pool.

Do you need to be a strong swimmer to do this activity?

You wear a life jacket throughout, so swimming ability matters less than comfort in water and a willingness to jump or slide. The guide assesses each person and adjusts the experience. Children from age 8 can participate when they meet the fitness requirements.

What happens if you don't want to jump or slide at every pool?

The guide works with each person's comfort level. You can skip a jump or slide and swim around the pool instead, or watch others and move at your own pace through the canyon.

Is the water cold?

The pools are fed by mountain water, so they are cool and refreshing, especially in the upper pools. The guide can tell you which pools are deeper and warmer if you prefer.
