The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup and a 30-minute uphill hike into the Damajagua canyon, where limestone has carved out a series of pools fed by seven waterfalls. Once you reach the top, the descent is the main event: you swim, jump and slide down through the water itself, moving from one pool to the next. The zip lines run between the canyon walls above the waterfalls, so you're suspended over the same landscape you'll be moving through on foot. Eight lines in total, with a professional guide managing the rigging and pacing.

After the waterfall section, you ride horses through the forest: a slower-paced contrast to the water work. Lunch is included and vegetarian options are available. The guides speak English, Spanish, French and German, and they carry all the equipment you need. You bring swimwear, old shoes that can get wet, and a t-shirt you don't mind soaking. Closed-toe shoes are required for both the zip lines and the horseback riding. The operator notes that weight on the zip lines maxes out at 260 lbs, and the harness sits on bare skin, so shorts should reach mid-thigh. Dresses and skirts are not suitable for the activity.

This is a full-day commitment in a physical setting: the hike is moderate, the water work requires confident swimming and comfort dropping into moving water, and you're on your feet or in the saddle for most of the time. Weather can change the route, and the guides make the final call on what's safe to do. Children are welcome from age 8 and must be accompanied by an adult. The activity is not available to cruise ship passengers. You choose your pickup location (Sosua/Cabarete or Puerto Plata) at checkout.

Is this one for you?Choose this if you want to move through the landscape actively (swimming, jumping, sliding and riding) rather than watching from a fixed vantage point. The full day and the physical demands mean you need moderate-to-good fitness and real comfort in water. The payoff is that you experience the waterfalls from inside them, not from a viewing platform.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French and German.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (8 to 11 years). Children under 8 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's involved in the waterfall section of this activity?

The Waterfalls of Damajagua is a series of seven cascades carved into limestone. After a 30-minute hike uphill, you descend by swimming, jumping and sliding through the pools themselves, moving down the canyon with the guide. The eight zip lines run above this same section, so you experience the landscape from both angles.

Do I need to be an experienced swimmer for this?

Yes, you should be a confident swimmer and comfortable dropping into moving water. Even with a life jacket and a guide, the activity involves jumping into pools fed by active waterfalls, so fear of water or weak swimming ability makes this unsuitable.

What should I wear and bring?

Bring swimwear, old sport shoes that can get wet, a t-shirt that can get wet, a towel, a change of clothes, sun protector and insect repellent. Wear closed-toe shoes and shorts or pants for the zip lining and horseback riding: no flip-flops or skirts during the activities. Shorts should reach mid-thigh so the harness doesn't sit on bare skin. Female guests often wear shorts to protect their upper thighs on the water slides.

Is lunch included, and are there vegetarian options?

Yes, lunch is included and vegetarian-friendly options are available. Bottled water is also provided throughout the day.

How do I choose between the Sosua/Cabarete and Puerto Plata pickup locations?

Both are hotel pickup options on the North Coast. You select your preferred location at checkout. The activity itself is the same from either starting point.
