The experience

I didn’t really know what to expect when we stepped onto the Sandra at Medulin harbor. I just remember the salty air and someone handing me a cold drink right away. Our guide, Marko, grinned and told us to keep our eyes open for dolphins but “not to be mad at him if they’re feeling shy.” The boat was already humming with music (someone’s playlist, nothing fancy), and a few kids were dancing before we’d even left the dock.

The first bit was just drifting past these small islands (the Medulin archipelago, Marko said) with the sky starting to turn that weird gold-pink you only get by the sea. There was a breeze that kept blowing cabbage salad smell from the kitchen my way (not complaining). We cruised along Kamenjak’s edge, cliffs on one side, open Adriatic on the other. People pointed out jellyfish in the water. I tried to get a photo but missed it. Typical.

Then someone shouted “dolphins!” and everyone rushed to one side (the boat leaned just enough to make you laugh nervously). We did see them, not close enough to touch or anything dramatic, but there they were, surfacing in twos against the sunset. I think I forgot about my dinner for a minute. Marko told us about Porer lighthouse as we passed it. Apparently it’s been warning sailors since Austro-Hungarian times. He joked that if you blinked you’d miss it. He wasn’t wrong.

Dinner came out right after: tuna steak for me (still warm), ciabatta bread that tasted better than it looked, plus wine that went down too easily. Some people danced again. Others just leaned on the rail watching light fade over Kamenjak. By the time we headed back toward Medulin around 8:30pm, nobody seemed in a hurry. I still think about those dolphins sometimes: how everyone got quiet all at once when they appeared, like we were all holding our breath together.
