The Experience

The boat leaves Pula port and enters the 4.5-kilometer Gulf of Pula, where you'll pass the Austro-Hungarian forts of Muzil and Štinjan still standing on the shores. From there the route heads toward the Brijuni islands, passing the Peneda lighthouse at the southern edge of the national park. Your guide narrates the history and ecology as you travel — the islands themselves are the sights, not stops you leave the boat to explore. You'll see Vanga island and the White Villa, the former residence of Josip Broz Tito, which remain under state protection and are visible only from the water. The boat continues past Mali Brijun, the second-largest island, where Fort Brioni Minor — the largest fort on the Adriatic coast, built in 1895 — now hosts the summer theater Ulysses. Veliki Brijun, the largest island, appears next, a mix of cultivated parkland and architectural remains from the 19th century when Paul Kupelwieser transformed it into an exclusive resort.

Throughout the cruise, the waters around the islands are where bottlenose dolphins feed and play. When the guide spots them, the boat slows so you can watch from the deck or the air-conditioned lounge. The ship is equipped with covered and open sundecks, stereo sound, two toilets, a bar and a kitchen; capacity is limited to 100 guests even though the Europa is registered for 148, so there's room to move around. Drinks flow throughout — red and white Istrian wine, Coca-Cola, Fanta, iced tea and water are unlimited. If you've booked the dinner option, the crew serves it during the cruise; without it, drinks alone sustain the afternoon.

As the sun approaches the horizon, the boat turns back toward Pula. The return passes through the same waters where dolphins may appear again, and the final approach to port frames the illuminated Pula amphitheater and the city's famous lighting giants. The whole experience unfolds on the water — there are no landings, no walking, no schedule to manage beyond the three-hour window. The captain is experienced; the crew is friendly; the boat is certified and comfortable.

  • unlimited red and white Istrian wine, soft drinks and water throughout.

Is this one for you?Book the dinner option if you want a full meal woven into the afternoon and don't mind a longer commitment to the boat; choose drinks only if you prefer to eat before or after and want the flexibility to move around more freely. Either way, the three-hour window and the guide's narration mean you learn about the dolphins and the islands without arranging anything yourself.

Top questions

What are the 14 islands of Brijuni National Park that we pass on this cruise?

The tour passes all 14 islands of the Brijuni National Park. The named stops include Vanga island with Tito's White Villa residence, Mali Brijun (the second-largest island) with Fort Brioni Minor, and Veliki Brijun (the largest and most visited island), which contains both cultivated parkland and protected architectural heritage. The route also passes the Peneda lighthouse at the southern point of the park and several Bronze Age fortified settlements. Your guide narrates the history and ecology of each as the boat travels.

Will we definitely see dolphins on this tour?

The waters around the Brijuni islands are home to schools of bottlenose dolphins, and the guide actively searches for them during the cruise. When dolphins are spotted, the boat slows so you can watch them feed, play and swim in their natural habitat from the deck or the indoor lounge. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the tour is specifically designed around finding them.

Is dinner included, or do I need to choose it separately?

Dinner is optional and depends on which booking option you select. The "Dolphin & Sunset Watching with Dinner and Drinks" option includes a full dinner served by the crew during the cruise. The "Dolphin & Sunset Watching — Without Dinner" option includes unlimited drinks only. Both options include wine, soft drinks and water throughout the three hours.

What drinks are included on the cruise?

Unlimited drinks are included on both booking options: red and white Istrian wine, Coca-Cola, Fanta, iced tea and water are available throughout the entire three-hour cruise. The bar is staffed, and drinks are served by the crew.

What is the boat like, and where can I sit during the cruise?

The ship Europa is a comfortable, fully equipped excursion boat with a covered sundeck, an open terrace, an air-conditioned indoor lounge, stereo sound, two toilets, a bar and a kitchen. Capacity is limited to 100 guests to ensure plenty of space, even though the boat is registered for 148 passengers. You can move between the decks and the lounge throughout the cruise.

What time does the sun set, and when do we return to port?

The cruise is three hours long and timed to include the sunset over the Brijuni islands. The exact sunset time varies by season, but the tour is scheduled so you watch it from the water aboard the Europa. The boat returns to Pula port as darkness falls, passing the illuminated Pula amphitheater and the city's famous lighting giants on the final approach.
