The experience
The ship leaves Pula carrying you and a guide out to Brijuni National Park, one of the Adriatic's largest protected areas. As you cruise around the islands, your guide points out the wild animals that live there (dolphins often follow the boat to feed on the large fish population), and shares the history of the islands and their former owners. This part of the tour runs about three hours, with the boat doing the work while you watch from the deck.
Midway through, the ship stops at St. Jerolim Island, where you have 2.5 hours to do as you please. The island has a beach, a shower and a restaurant. Most people swim or walk the shoreline, though you can stay on the boat if you prefer. Lunch (a choice of first-class fish, meat or a vegetarian assortment) arrives while you're there or on the water, paired with unlimited white wine, Coca-Cola, Fanta, mineral water and juice. The ship returns to pick you up at the set time.
On the way back to Pula, you'll see the Pula Arena, the Roman Amphitheater that sits at the city's edge. The whole outing takes 5.5 hours from start to finish.
Is this one for you?The tour departs from Pula by ship, so you don't need a car or arrange separate transport to the islands. The boat is your transport and your base for the whole day. If you're staying in the city or arriving by public transit, this is how you reach Brijuni National Park and the Adriatic's best swimming without driving.
