Hvar Wine Tasting: Small Group, Winery Visit & Tasting
Taste Plavac Mali where the wind and sun make it.
A small-group wine tasting on Hvar begins with pickup from your hotel or the ferry port, then a scenic drive across the island to the Dalmatian region's most important wine area. You visit a working winery with a guide, taste local wines including Plavac Mali—the indigenous grape of the region—and learn how the island's strong wind and sun shape the harvest. The experience lasts 2.5 hours and includes the driver, tasting, and olive oil sampling.
The Experience
The drive itself is part of the tasting. You leave Hvar town and cross the island toward Jelsa or Vrboska, passing villages and lavender fields on the way to a winery that sits in the heart of the region. The route shows you another side of the island—not the harbor town, but the agricultural landscape that feeds it. A guide meets you at the winery and walks through the winemaking process, the grapes, and what the local climate does to the wine.
Plavac Mali is the grape you'll taste—it's the most indigenous variety in Dalmatia, and the conditions here (strong wind, intense sun) are what make it work. You taste wine in the winery itself, in a setting built around the work, not around tourism. Olive oil tasting is part of the experience. The whole thing takes 2.5 hours, and the driver brings you back to your hotel, the bus station, or the ferry port in Stari Grad when it's done.
Departures run at 11:00 am or 4:00 pm, and the guide speaks English. The minimum group size is two people; if bookings don't reach that, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund. Vegetarian options are available if you let them know when you book. You need to be 18 or older to participate.
