The experience

I didn’t really expect the wind to smell so much like herbs. We’d barely left Hvar town when our guide, Mario, grinned and pointed out a patchwork of silver-green olive trees. The tuk tuk rattled a bit as we climbed up toward Brusje, not uncomfortable, just kind of fun, like being in a toy car. There was this moment where the sea suddenly appeared behind us, blue and endless, and I almost dropped my phone trying to take it in. Mario just laughed and said everyone does that.

The lavender fields near Brusje were quieter than I thought they’d be. No crowds, just us and the bees (and honestly, I was more nervous about the bees than anyone else seemed to be). The air was thick with that sharp-sweet scent, not like bottled lavender at all. Mario told us how his grandmother used to harvest here. He even showed us how to rub the flowers between our palms until our hands smelled for hours. I still catch that scent sometimes on my backpack.

The last stretch took us down to Milna for a quick look at the water (so clear you could see every pebble) before swinging back up toward Fortica for one final view over Hvar town and the Pakleni islands. We didn’t go inside the fortress. Just stood there for a while as Mario pointed out little boats moving between islands. It wasn’t fancy or dramatic, but honestly that’s what made it stick with me.
